Google’s Self-driving Car – now in racing mode

We have talked about Google’s self driving cars on a couple of previous occasions:

Now Google has a version that can drive like a bat out of hell (in case you are wondering where that expression originated, this page can help):

This does look impressive, but it is not quite as impressive as it first appears. When Google cars are out driving on real roads, the car is identifying things like road edges, lane markers, stop signs, pedestrians, other cars, etc. and driving itself. However, on this closed course, essentially the car has been preprogrammed with the path to follow and is executing that path. If the cones were removed, the car would do exactly the same thing.

BMW demonstrated the same kind of technology, a bit more impressively, back in 2007, as seen here:
